Thieves steal mail from more than 6 Ladue households

LADUE, Mo. — Mail from more than half a dozen homes in Ladue has been stolen, prompting police alerts.
In recent weeks, mail thieves have broken into more than six homes near Warson and Conway streets. This is an area with many residential areas. It is displayed in addition to reports on checked mailboxes.
Suspicious activity was noticed by a local resident a few weeks ago.
“Someone was walking the dog and stopped by the neighbor’s mailbox and they fiddled with it,” said John Marcus, a Ladue resident. “So it was weird for me; I didn’t know what he was doing.”
The crime is not just an invasion of privacy, but can lead to serious consequences such as identity theft and check laundering. A strategy aimed at altering amounts by diverting money into the hands of thieves. Something that happened to the Gerlochs of Conway this summer.
“They’re really secretive about it,” Seth Gerloch said. “We got a notice from our bank that a much larger amount was withdrawn, so we were like, ‘okay, what happened’ and went back and looked at it, and that’s when we started asking questions and trying to figure out where That comes?”
Thieves stole an HVAC check originally written for $1,000 and changed it to $3,000, which they then stole.
“This is your private bank account, this is your money,” said Gerloch. “Seeing that come out of there is something you don’t expect.”
Your bank solved it, but for many others it’s not that simple.
Police warn that when you drop your mail in your mailbox, be sure to stay alert and notice if anything has gone missing.
They are working with the United States Postal Service to continue the investigation.
