NBA legends like Charles Barkley are not big fans of analysis in the NBA. Things got a little heated when Charles targeted the Rockets General Manager about this
The NBA we see now is much more complex than in previous eras in terms of statistics. Advanced Analytics was introduced into the sport in the early 2000s through Baseball.
Over the next decade, many senior offices of NBA teams bought up the idea of analytics. The Houston Rockets are the poster guy for this. Rocket’s then-General Manager Daryl Morey was a big believer in integrating advanced statistical analysis with traditional scouting and basic statistics, a trend that started after Moneyball.
In 2012, the Rockets were James Harden and a year later they have Dwight Howard. NBA legend Charles Barkley points out the irony of Morey’s system. He said, “They have Dwight Howard, they have James Harden. That’s the analysis like?”.
“I have always believed that analysis is crap”: Charles Barkley
During Morey’s tenure, the Rockets reached the knockout stages nine times but never made it past the Western Conference Finals. After trading Harden this year, they are in the rebuilding phase.
As for the championship, the ‘Moneyball’ experiment failed in Houston. According to Chuck, “the NBA is about talent.” He’s right when you think that since 2000, every championship team has had at least one All-Star.
Chuck doesn’t hold back on anything. He once said, “All the people who run these organizations who talk about analytics have one thing in common. They never played games and they never got girls in high school. And they just want to be in the game.”
Chuck’s criticisms may be harsh but there’s no denying that the analytics have impacted the game, both for good and for bad. Modern big boys are required to spin more 3s, all of which are advanced stats. Inside the NBA panelists, Chuck and Shaquille O’Neal’s criticisms of centers that shoot 3s instead of diving into the paint continue to this day.
