The Wilton Manors Pride Festival returns after last year’s tragic accident, but safety is becoming more expensive

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – Wilton Manors will mark Pride Month with its annual Stonewall Pride Festival this weekend, a year after a fatal accident marred the occasion in 2021.

Security will be tight after scares at Pride events across the country, including in South Florida.

In the wake of recent mass shootings across the country and documented credible threats of violence at Pride events from Idaho to West Palm Beach earlier this month, Wilton Manors City Commissioner Chris Caputo told Local 10 News that the safety law at the Pride festival of his City scheduled for Saturday rises from about $50,000 to a whopping $92,000 this year.

Caputo said it wasn’t just the required number of officers, hours and equipment.

He says Broward County, which normally allocates around $25,000 in security resources to the event, has decided it can’t afford it this year.

“They have their own budget concerns, so they backed out and said, ‘Hey, you’ve got to pay for that yourself, and that’s where a third of the total cost was,'” Caputo said.

Caputo said city officials and event organizers have been looking for ways to foot the bill because the cost of not having pride is even greater.

“We lose if we don’t show up,” he said. “Now more than ever we need events like this and the truth has come out this Saturday, there will be no place safer or more fabulous than Wilton Manors.”
