The untold truth about happiness

Although Peter Paul’s candy company has roots in the early 20th century, it wasn’t until the 1940s that Almond Joy was invented – and for this we have Mounds to thank.

In his early days, Peter Paul made various candy bars, including two with coconut. Konabar, a combination of chocolate, coconut, nuts and fruit, was the first unique product made and sold by the company, according to Connecticut Explored. Meanwhile, Mounds is invented in 1921: a simple combination of dark chocolate covered coconut filling will prove to be not only the sketchbook for Almond Joy but also the company’s most popular bar.

With the success of Mounds, Cal Kazanjian, who was appointed president of the company upon Paul’s death in 1927, decided to specialize rather than diversify. In his late 20s, he decided to stop making most of the company’s other products to focus on the best-selling Mounds, where production was tedious, like the company still made it manually. . Kazanjian developed automatic machines to facilitate their production and flourishing business. By the 30s, Peter Paul had become the largest consumer of coconuts in the world, and this development would later make it easier to produce Almond Joy.
