The UK is now preparing for the first day of 40C temperatures, breaking all previous records, a top meteorologist has said.

BBC weatherman Matt Taylor said he “never thought this would be so soon” when he released the channel’s updated forecast.

A yellow extreme heat alert now covers the whole of England for 72 hours, prompting fears of a surge in heat-related casualties.

If mercury hits 40C in the coming days, it would surpass the current UK record of 38.7C, set in Cambridge in 2019.

Cardiff’s A&E adviser, Dr. Farbod Babolhavaeji, 38, urged people to stay indoors and drink plenty of water during the hottest part of the day.

“It’s not just the sunstroke and heat exhaustion, there’s a significant risk of developing a stroke in the heat,” he added.

“There are long waits for ambulances outside of emergency rooms and despite everything we’re doing, increasing demand means we’re struggling to accommodate patients.”
