Sources close to Sun Cable’s board, who are not authorized to comment publicly on the matter, previously said Forrest was concerned about the increase in underwater survey and cable costs, while Singapore now has “numerous proposals” from other competitors , who are planning projects in more favorable locations .

Another source said Forrest has his eye on using the renewable electricity from Sun Cable’s planned solar farm to produce green hydrogen — a clean fuel made by using a renewable-energy electrolyser to convert water split into hydrogen and oxygen. Fortescue Future Industries, the green energy arm of Forrest-backed iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group, is proposing several green hydrogen projects across the country, including in the Northern Territory.
