This means that a 5ft 10″ (70″) adult should start to worry once their jean size creeps past 35″.

It’s the first time the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has directly asked the public to take care of their stomachs by reaching for a tape measure.

Two out of three adults are overweight, increasing their risk of diabetes, liver and heart disease, and several types of cancer.

dr Paul Chrisp, director of the Center for Guidelines at NICE, said: “A clear benefit of using the waist-to-height ratio is that people can easily measure it themselves, interpret the results, and seek medical advice if their health is at risk.”

Prof Rachel Batterham, Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology Advisor, who helped draft the advice, said: “Gained abdominal fat increases a person’s risk of developing several life-limiting diseases, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“Waist-to-height ratio is a simple, user-friendly measure that identifies individuals at increased health risk who would benefit from weight management assistance to improve their health.”

The 2019 Health Survey for England estimated that 28 per cent of adults were obese and 36 per cent were overweight.

The current cost of obesity is £6.1 billion to the NHS and £27 billion to the wider society.
