Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson opens up on Black Adam’s future in DC Movies: Everything to Know

A change of plans. Dwayne The Rock Johnson shared “a long-awaited Black Adam Update on the character’s future in the DC Universe” just two months after his first film hit theaters – and that’s not exactly good news.”James Gunn and I connected and, Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling Red notice Star, 50, wrote in a lengthy statement on Instagram on Tuesday, December 20. “However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be used in future chapters of the DC Multiverse.” Gunn, 56, and Peter Safran became the new co-chairmen in late October and Chief Executive Officers of DC Studios. Over the last few weeks they have made it clear that there will be changes to the DCU. These changes don’t seem to include Black Adam 2 – at least not immediately. “James and I have known each other for years and have always been committed to each other’s success,” Johnson added. “It’s no different now, and I will always have a passion for DC (and Marvel) winning and WIN BIG.”
The founder of Teremana Tequila continued, “You know me and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words. These decisions, made by James and the DC leadership, represent their vision of DCU through their creative lens. After 15 years of tireless hard work to finally finish Black Adam with great gratitude, humility and love. We did great.” Gunn retweeted Johnson’s statement, adding: “I love @TheRock and I’m always excited to see what he and Seven Bucks do next. I can’t wait to start working together soon.”
Black Adam followed Johnson’s title character, who has divine powers. Imprisoned for 5,000 years, he returns to seek revenge. The film grossed $391 million at the box office worldwide. However, some reports claimed Black Adam had to make $600 million to break even after marketing expenses. Johnson took to Twitter on Dec. 7 to state that the film is expected to turn a profit. “I’ve been waiting to confirm the financiers before sharing this excellent #BlackAdam news – our movie will WIN between $52M and $72M. Fact. At almost $400 million worldwide, we are building our new franchise step by step (initially Captain America Donated $370M for DC’s future,” he tweeted at the time. No Henry Cavill as Superman

The first sign that the Black Adam Sequel had not happened was when Henry Cavill when Superman was announced weeks after his return with a cameo at the end Black Adam.

“I’ve just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news for everyone. After all, I won’t be returning as Superman,” Cavill, 39, wrote via Instagram on Dec. 14 at simplest but such is life.”

Gunn told a fan upset by Cavill’s departure that they still hit it off. “It’s anything but cold for me,” he wrote via Twitter. “I sat down with Henry in person yesterday and we had a very open, honest and respectful discussion. We have communicated since then and he and I are fine.”

James Gunn claps back at critics

Amid changes that Guardians of the Galaxy The director took to Twitter to respond to the haters and trolls. “One of the things that Peter and I were aware of when we took on the job of running DC Studios was a certain minority of people online who could be outrageous and unkind to say the least,” he wrote on Monday, December 19. “Our decisions for the DCU are based on what we feel is best for the story and best for the DC characters that have been around for nearly 85 years. Maybe these decisions are great, maybe not, but they are made with a sincere heart & integrity & always with history in mind. No one likes to be harassed or verbally abused – but to be honest, we’ve been through far worse.”

He concluded: “Disrespectful outcry will never affect our actions. We were aware that there would be a turbulent time as we embarked on this gig, and we knew that sometimes we had to make difficult and not-so-obvious decisions, especially as a result of the contradictory nature of what was coming our way. But that means little to us compared to our work as artists and stewards helping to create a bright and wonderful future for DC.

Building the Next Decade of DC Movies

“While this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of storyline will take time and we’re just getting started,” Gunn shared via Twitter on Dec. 8, amid reports that Wonder Woman 3 may not star Patty Jenkins will be held. Gunn said only parts of the report were true, while other details hadn’t even been established.

“Peter and I decided to run DC Studios because we knew we were going to be, and would be, in a turbulent environment, both in terms of the stories being told and the audiences themselves “There’s going to be an inevitable transition period when we move into making a cohesive storyline across film, television, animation and games,” he explained. “But in the end, the downsides of that transition period were the creative opportunities and the ability to build on what was in DC eclipsed what worked before and helped correct what didn’t work.”

There will be updates in 2023

“As for further answers on the future of the DCU, I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to wait. We’re giving these characters and the stories the time and attention they deserve, and we have many more questions to ask and answer ourselves. ‘ Gunn said on Dec. 8.

On December 14, amid the news that Cavill was leaving, Gunn confirmed he was writing a screenplay for a Superman movie. “Peter and I have a DC board ready to go, which we couldn’t be happier about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects early in the new year,” Gunn said. “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
