Not everyone Grey’s anatomy Output is created in the same way. Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers and more stars have left Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital — for various reasons.
Created by Shonda Rhimes and main role Ellen Pompeo, Grey’s Anatomy debuted on ABC in 2005. While the actress who plays Meredith Gray has admitted she almost walked away in the past, Pompeo is one of the few original cast members remaining on the show as of season 17. Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) are the only other two remaining OGs.
Even Rhimes left ABC in 2017, handing over the reins Krista Vernoff to take over as showrunner.
“Every show I’ve ever worked on has had stories that you wish could have been told differently, but were derailed by a behind-the-scenes issue. And that’s what the fans don’t understand,” vernoff, who worked on seasons 1-7 of Grays before returning for season 14, the said Los Angeles Times in November 2020. “So when you’re responding to fan outcry, you can go insane because you want to tell them, ‘If a couple broke up really suddenly in the middle of a really, really beautiful arc, it probably wasn’t like that, what the authors wanted! Something was probably going on behind the scenes that we had to stay up all night rewriting scripts to have the semblance of a story to tell. That’s why TV writers have producer titles, because you don’t spend two years writing a script and then it’s a perfect script and then you send it out to people to shoot. Personalities are involved.”
As an example, Vernoff cited Heigl’s unprecedented exit in the middle of Season 6.
“There was a solution to Izzie’s story. We had planned for her to come back for an episode to really engage Izzie and Alex (Chambers). And I wrote that episode, and it was beautiful. The day before it was supposed to start prep or filming, I can’t remember, we got a call that Katie wasn’t coming. Just didn’t come. I didn’t want to do it,” the author said. “It became my job to stay up all night for several nights reinventing a script that didn’t involve Izzie. And for years and years and years and years and years the fans have been screaming at us, ‘How could you?’ Well, that’s the story behind the scenes. That’s what happened. I’m not saying this to beat up Katie. I don’t know what happened in her life.”
However, sources close to Heigel say Us that “Vernoff is wrong” when it comes to the actress leaving the show. “Katherine was back in LA after maternity leave (when she adopted her daughter) waiting to be called to the set,” the sources said.
While Heigl hasn’t returned since she left in 2010, Dempsey made headlines in November 2020 when his character, who died in season 11, made an anticipated appearance in the season 17 premiere.
“Patrick and Ellen and I were all there at the beginning; I wasn’t there for the pilot, but I was there for the first seven seasons, and that was 17 years ago,” Vernoff said meeting back then. “That was about a lifetime ago; My children weren’t alive. It was so wild going to that beach and just being together again as these different people that we are now. But I cannot stress enough how joyful and healing this experience was.”
