A woman is furious after finding a man using a urinal in a men’s bathroom that was mistakenly labeled as gender neutral.

Associate Professor Sarahjane Jones, 35, attended a Health Research Authority (HRA) conference at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester on Wednesday.

When she went to the restroom, she chose the one that said “inclusive” with a sign that showed a man, a woman, and a mixture of both.

She claims to have met a man with a urinal that she should have passed to get to a stall.

Sarahjane, who researches patient safety at Staffordshire University, later tweeted about her bathroom experience, saying: “This is not an example of inclusion! And is totally unacceptable.”

Since then, more than 1,000 people have commented on the post, with one commenter calling it “insane” and another writing, “Funny how this inclusion always excludes women.”

The museum has since confirmed that it mistakenly labeled this gender-neutral toilet as “inclusive” when it was actually intended for men only.

While the museum does offer gender-neutral facilities, these bathrooms typically consist of privacy stalls — rather than urinals.

But workers had to adjust the space used for the HRA event and a male bathroom was incorrectly labeled as gender neutral, a spokesman said.

The HRA said it apologized to Sarahjane “for the distress caused” and said it had called for the museum to be “gender inclusive”.

A spokesman for the public body said: “The signs were replaced as soon as we became aware of the problem.

“We spoke to the venue. Both the HRA and the Museum will learn from this to ensure the same mistakes are not made in the future.”

They added: “We regret any distress caused by this incident, which took place at a private event at the museum’s conference center, where there are male, female and accessible restrooms.

“Some customers are requesting all gender facilities which we are offering by changing the signage on the toilets which only have cubicles.

“However, in this isolated case, a facility that contained a urinal was incorrectly signposted as an all-gender toilet, in addition to the rooms that only have private stalls.

“Our organizational position is that toilets with urinals are not used as an all-gender facility.

“As a museum group aiming to be ‘open to all’, we believe that you have a right to use the toilet of your choice.

“In the publicly accessible rooms of the museum, we offer toilets for men, women and all genders as well as barrier-free toilets and a changing facility.” has reached out to Sarahjane for comment.
