The new Cross Border Xpress expansion should reduce waiting times

SAN DIEGO – A major expansion of a processing facility at the Cross Border Xpress sky bridge to Tijuana International Airport aims to reduce wait times for travelers.

The nearly $100 million project that took years to build is an expansion of the Cross Border Xpress, the pedestrian bridge for passengers flying out of Tijuana. It gives people the ability to cross the US-Mexico border faster at a time the number of passengers at the airport is increasing.

The new 430,000-square-foot addition will also help process passengers at the bridge.

In all, the expansion adds six new immigration counters, five new customs lines, two new gates and 52 check-in counters.

“Essentially, it’s an expansion we can be proud of,” said Julie Coker, president and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority, on Monday. “Plus, it will speed people up and save time.”

Coker said travelers have two choices. The first, she said, is a 20-minute drive to use Tijuana Airport, rather than traveling north to use Orange County’s John Wayne Airport or Los Angeles International Airport.

Second, using the Cross Border Xpress is “efficient and very safe.”

“Enlargement will really move people faster,” she said. “For San Diego it gives you one more option because they are chasing an international flight that we may not be able to get here in San Diego so it gives you a few more options. Often CBX’s flights are a little less than ours can charge here.”

More than 2.7 million travelers crossed the bridge last year. With a 75% increase in security capacity, it is estimated that more than 17 million people will pass through the new facility to get to the airport by 2034.
