Nadhim Zahawi has slammed Boris Johnson in a letter urging him to ‘go now’.

The newly appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, who replaced Rishi Sunak, claims he only took the role “out of loyalty”.

Mr Zahawi wrote: “If people have thought badly of me because of this decision, it is criticism I am willing to shoulder.”

He added: “Yesterday, along with my colleagues at No 10, I made it clear to the Prime Minister that there is only one direction this is going and that it should go with dignity.

“Out of respect and hoping he would listen to an old friend of 30, I kept that advice to myself.

“I am heartbroken that he was not listening and that at this late hour he is undermining the incredible achievements of this administration.

“Prime Minister, you know in your heart what is right and now go.”

Nadhim Zahawi @nadhimzahawi ? 5m Prime Minister: This is unsustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and above all for the whole country. You have to do the right thing and go now.

Mr. Zahawi was promoted amid a leadership crisis, having served in the Cabinet as Education Secretary since September 2021, with Universities Secretary Michelle Donelan replacing him in his previous role.

This morning Ms Donelan resigned from her newly appointed position after barely 48 hours on the job.

In a letter she tweeted this morning, she wrote that she “begged” Mr Johnson to step down during the Crunch talks at Downing Street.

The Prime Minister had met ministers last night where he was told he had lost the Tory Party’s confidence and could not continue in office.

He’s set for more high-level figures to resign today as his government’s slow-motion collapse enters a third day.

Mr Johnson slammed last night by sacking “traitorous” cabinet rival Michael Gove and promising to “outline a new economic program of tax cuts, deregulation and the benefits of Brexit”.

The full letter from Nadhim Zahawi

My top priority is and always will be this great country. When I was asked to become chancellor, I did it out of loyalty. Not to a man, but loyalty to this country and all it has given me.

The challenges Britain faces, be it inflation or Putin’s war in Ukraine, will stop at nothing and it is vital that key government agencies continue to function in a national crisis.

If people thought badly of me because of this decision, it’s criticism I’m willing to take.

Yesterday, together with my colleagues in No. 10, I made it clear to the Prime Minister that there is only one direction to go and that he should go with dignity.

Out of respect and in the hope that he would listen to an old friend of 30, I kept that advice to myself.

It breaks my heart that he wasn’t listening and that at this late hour he is undermining the incredible achievements of this administration.

No one will forget getting Brexit done, keeping a dangerous anti-Semite out of No 10, our handling of Covid and our support for Ukraine in its hour of need.
But the country deserves a government that is not only stable but also acts with integrity.

Prime Minister, you know in your heart what is right and now go.
