The moon knight costume was made from 803 different pieces

Creating a new superhero suit for a Marvel hero is no easy task as the costume director for Disney Plus’ latest miniseries, moon knightis aware of this.

Many of the costumes on the show have little touches here and there, even some references to her character that only the most observant fans have noticed. However, creating the title character’s costume for Oscar Isaac proved extremely difficult for costume designer Meghan Kasperlik, who couldn’t even get her hands on the entire outfit due to COVID-19 restrictions – instead, parts of it were mailed each week to Arrange and to mark.

The suit, which consisted of 803 pieces in all, was then built by a London-based company, FBFX, which specializes in supplying special effects costumes. In an interview with Variety, moon knight‘s Kasperlik spoke about how she approaches her craft and the incredibly meticulous construction of the now iconic suit.

“I never want a costume in the story unless it’s high fashion and needs to be really eye-catching to see your face, so everyone down the line has little touches on their costumes.”

Kasperlik had to do “an enormous amount of research” for the Egyptian-inspired costumes, speaking to Egyptian crew members like director Mohamed Diab and co-star May Calamawy, and visiting the Met Museum in New York, which houses an extensive Egyptian art collection.

Creating something that fans will recognize from the comics while simultaneously updating it, making it workable for the actor and adding their own creative flair is difficult enough, but doing it all during the COVID-19 pandemic when you can’t once you can work with the whole costume is another matter entirely.

moon knight Having more than a superhero costume and the character’s friendlier alter ego, Mr. Knight’s costume also presented a challenge to the designer, and Kasperlik explained:

“Mr. Knight is a three-piece suit, which scared me. One really important thing was that we didn’t use a matte white fabric, like you’d expect. It’s a white-on-white textured fabric, which then has a silver Has lamb in it so when the light hits it it bounces off I knew we would be filming a lot at night so it was all about creating that texture in the fabric to make sure it wasn’t blown out all the way and it just looked easy like a white marshmallow running across the screen.”

It was a huge undertaking for the designer, who is happy with the end result, stating, “I really felt that this was a great representation of the new transition of the way the MCU will be.”

moon knight can be streamed on Disney Plus.
