Traffic forecasters have uncovered the worst congestion zones motorists will face as Britain plunges into an unprecedented travel rush during the anniversary period.

The double bank holiday means around 19.5 million car journeys will be made between Wednesday and Sunday, according to the RAC.

Friday is expected to be the busiest as day-trippers mix with families returning home from half-time breaks, but heavy traffic is expected on some motorways throughout the period.

Many of the worst delays are expected on Wednesday, when drivers head off after work.

Inrix traffic data analysts have identified eight major congestion hotspots where delays can swell to almost an hour and a half at peak times.

A large section of the southbound M5 is expected to suffer delays of 88 minutes on Thursday morning as families in the west of England head to Devon and Cornwall.

Data suggests traffic will be worst between the Almondsbury Interchange, between Bristol and Severn Bridge and the junction with the A38 near Bridgewater.

Data indicates delays of 47 minutes late Wednesday afternoon on the westbound A303 between Stonehenge and its junction with the A36 near Deptford.

The same route is expected to experience a 40-minute delay on Thursday.

The M25 is likely to be 51 minutes late between Junction 4 near Bromley and Junction 1 near Swanscombe and 45 minutes late between Junction 10 near Guildford and Junction 6 near East Grinstead on Wednesday afternoon suffer.

On the same route, delays of more than half an hour are to be expected on both Friday and Sunday in the early evening hours.

The motorway is also interrupted repeatedly in an anti-clockwise direction between junction 17 and junction 12 for the M3.

This route will experience delays of at least 30 minutes on Thursday morning, Friday morning and Sunday morning.

Drivers in Wales have been instructed to expect average delays of 44 minutes early Wednesday evening on the westbound M4 between Junction 38 near Port Talbort and Junction 46 at Felindre.

Families traveling to and from Edinburgh were also warned of 34-minute delays on the westbound A720 between the junction with the A1 and the Dreghorn link on Friday and Sunday morning.

A separate RAC survey found that around 37% of drivers have no plans to drive long distances at the weekend.

RAC Traffic Spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Drivers clearly see a double bank holiday so close to summer as a gift with so millions of people keen to make the most of it – although many seem keen to keep their road trips short , maybe a day trip or two with an anniversary celebration at home.

“The fact that in many places the bank holidays coincide with the end of the semester break can put additional strain on the road network, so it’s important to plan a trip carefully to avoid the worst of queues.”

Network Rail has ruled out engineering work normally scheduled for bank holidays to keep all key routes open during the anniversary celebrations.
