Ever since we were kids we’ve been taught to NEVER leave the house when the stove is on… pardon the pun.
But as for the washing machine? Well, we’re constantly tackling loads of laundry and then rushing off to get other chores done.
However, thanks to this chilling TikTok warning, that is now a thing of the past.
Earlier this week, TikToker Alan Johnson was stunned when he walked into the kitchen and saw smoke billowing from his washing machine.
He wrote: “How often do we leave the washing machine on unattended?
“That happened today and luckily we did [were] home, otherwise it would have caught fire.”
In the comments, Alan explained hearing a loud bang followed by a burning smell.
He unplugged the washing machine in the last minute of the cycle and left it off – which luckily prevented it from catching fire.
He captioned the clip: “If we weren’t home when this happened it certainly would have caught fire…”
According to washing machine experts at In The Wash, there are several reasons why machines can catch fire — including a clogged drain pipe, damaged electrical cords and a motor malfunction.
They added: “If your washing machine is overloaded with items, it can cause severe vibration.
“Excessive vibration can cause electrical components to short-circuit, which will inevitably lead to a fire.”
Since it’s difficult to spot these problems before the machine catches fire, the experts recommend always being at home when you have a load of laundry on.
Unsurprisingly, the clip left viewers stunned and many were grateful for the warning.
One replied: “Omg I do this all the time, wash up, go to work, come back at noon, put the dryer on and then put on another load.
“Won’t do that anymore!”
Another added: “New fear unlocked!”
From experience, a third said: “My aunt caught fire but they were about to leave the house so nothing terrible happens. I don’t leave devices unattended.”
