THE next iPhone is set to face a significant price hike that would make it Apple’s most expensive model yet.
So say tech pundits, who say the iPhone 14 will cost up to $100 more than its predecessor in the US and beyond.
That means the high-tech phone Apple is rumored to be releasing in September will cost as much as $1,149.
Speaking to The Sun, UK analyst Dan Ives explained that rising iPhone prices are partly due to factors beyond the company’s control.
Due to the global shortage of microchips, it costs more than ever to build an iPhone.
Added to this are inflation, fluctuating exchange rates and the freeze on sales in Russia due to the war in Ukraine.
In addition, from investment firm Wedbush Securities, Ives expects the iPhone 14 to feature enhanced augmented reality technology.
iPhone’s AR capabilities make it possible to scan objects and map the real world. Apple is rumored to be working on AR glasses.
“Apple will likely increase the price of the iPhone 14 by $100,” Dan told The Sun.
He added that the increase was due to the company “passing on price increases down the supply chain and more AR functionality.”
Dan’s comments were echoed by fellow analyst Paolo Pescatore, who said consumers were already being hit by political and economic turmoil.
Current weak exchange rates are expected to continue for months and likely drive up the cost of the iPhone 14.
“We usually always see rumors of a price increase ahead of the new iPhone,” Pescatore, founder of PPForesight, told The Sun.
“This year already feels different given the ongoing political and economic challenges.
“All of this combined with the disruption in the supply chain and the cost of living crisis, prices appear to be headed in the wrong direction.
“Apple recognizes that the new iPhone remains affordable, although some elements are beyond its control due to exchange rate fluctuations.”
Apple hasn’t even confirmed that the iPhone 14 will be made, although it’s safe to assume the device is in the works.
Expected to hit shelves in September or October, it will come with an upgraded camera and display, as well as AR upgrades.
According to rumors, four versions of the gadget will be presented by Apple.
They are the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
If the projected $100 price increase proves correct, the handsets would range in price from $800/£750 to $1,149/£1,100.
Those prices would represent the base models and consumers would have to spend even more for extras like extra storage.
