earlier this year when euphoria Season 2 has been released, talks about “Nepo Babies‘ appeared online. One of the stars of the HBO show is Maude ApatowFilmmaker’s daughter Judd Apatow.
In case there is any need for clarification on calling someone a Nepo baby is usually taken as an insult. It indicates that the person had a head start in their industry. There are plenty of actors who probably wouldn’t blink if someone called them a Nepo baby, but others balk at the term. Lily Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, is the latest celebrity to comment on the term. And it has rekindled the discourse.
“It’s weird for me to reduce someone to the idea that they’re only there because it’s a generational thing. It just doesn’t make sense,” Lily-Rose Depp said in a recent interview in ell. The interview triggered a flood of comments, especially models. Vittoria Ceretti wrote on one Instagram story, “You have no fucking idea how hard you have to fight to get people to respect you. LASTS FOR YEARS. You just get it on the first day off.”
Anok Yai wrote about the experience of “navigating an industry full of powerful influential people and feeling like nothing”. A few others interfered. That Mood was clear: Being a Nepo baby doesn’t make you a bad person – but you do have to appreciate the work it takes to survive in a highly competitive industry without family ties. And people argued that if you’re cool, if you acknowledge your privilege, the label doesn’t stick as much.
“The whole Nepo baby thing, like literally everything else, boils down to whether you have bad vibes. Nobody jumps Barrymore like that because she doesn’t have bad vibes. but we jump Gwyneth Paltrow (and often) because she does,” the author tweeted @laracroftbarbie.
“Lily Rose-Depp could have gone two ways with this Nepo Baby label. She could have kept her mouth shut, smoked her cigarettes and continued to be glorified for her rich girl image and be like Paris Hilton OR work hard in secret and let her work speak like Bella Hadid,” she wrote @BBsandwich_.
Why it matters
With social media, celebrities are inferior more accurate than ever. Fans are interested in how famous people treat others and how they talk about what it’s like to work in the entertainment industry. That’s why people are so interested in how actual nepo babies respond to the nepo baby label.
It’s like a test; if you are humble and Realize how you broke in the industry, you pass. If you can’t, expect criticism.
