OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – The newest members of the American Armed Forces were sworn in Friday at the US Coast Guard Air Station Miami in Opa-locka as part of a preview event ahead of this weekend’s Hyundai Air & Sea Show.
Held every Memorial Day weekend in Miami Beach, the annual event pays tribute to fallen soldiers and showcases cutting-edge military technology. It’s one of a number of Memorial Day events taking place across South Florida.
After the convocation ceremony, the local media got a chance to see some of the high-tech equipment.
“Usually in America we start with Memorial Day, it’s a long weekend, we’re focusing on the start of summer, barbecues and also getting ready for Daylight Saving Time,” said U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Maria R. Gervais. “But it’s also a great opportunity to have a show like this.”
“I will tell you, service to our nation, you truly understand what it means to defend what is so dear to our hearts,” she added.
Local 10 also spoke to US Air Force F-16 fighter pilot Capt. Aimee “Rebel” Fiedler, who will be hovering over South Florida over the weekend.
“It’s a single-seater, single-engine car, but it makes a lot of noise, so if you can’t see me, you’ll hear me fly,” Fiedler said. “(People) can expect a really cool show. It will take around 20 minutes. I will be doing a single ship demonstration which means I will be the only person flying. I’ll do some flips and tricks. It’s going to be really cool and compelling.”
“It should make (people) proud to be American,” she added.
