Titled leighthe image is the Huxleys’ homage to Australian designer and artist Leigh Bowery, whose diverse career of outlandish costumes and wild performances once included an enema on stage.

“The photo is our cheeky homage to that,” says Will Huxley, life and art partner of Garrett Huxley. “It was really quite uncomfortable. But it was fun.”

Part of the Sydney Festival and curated by Jacob Boehme, bloodlines, honoring legendary artists lost to HIV/AIDS is headlined by a series of living self-portraits along with a quilt work and two films.

Dressed in exquisite, shifting and magical costumes, they pay tribute to trailblazers such as Freddie Mercury, Derek Jarman, Keith Haring, Klaus Nomi, Peter Tully and David McDiarmid along with Peter Allen, Tina Chow, Hibiscus, Sylvester, Alvin Ailey, Robert Mapplethorpe and Cookie Mueller.

For Will and Garrett, who grew out of place as young queer people in Perth and the Gold Coast respectively, these figures of art, music, design and nightlife were hope and something to dream about.
