The historic Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach has been demolished

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A little piece of history in Miami Beach was demolished on Sunday morning.

The historic Deauville Hotel where the Beatles played in 1964 was derelict.

“This building is considered unsafe,” said a lawyer.

After years of legal battles and a failed referendum to increase population, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross proposed a new luxury development for the site — an idea supported by the Mayor of Miami Beach despite opposition from conservationists.

“Of course I was disappointed that something had to happen with this side. Otherwise, what has been an eyesore and a drain on the North Beach community for five years will continue,” Mayor Dan Gelber said.

The demolition took place shortly after 8 a.m

Contractors spent weeks preparing the site, drilling more than 1,200 holes in the building and removing materials.

“They’ve done thousands of these, and they have to get approvals and get approved, and they’ve gone through that process,” Gelber said.
