The good lawyer is a new TV series spin-off from The good doctor, starring Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman. Interestingly, the pilot episode will air on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 10 p.m. ET on an episode of The Good Doctor. The Good Lawyer Summary

Kennedy McMann stars as Joni DeGroot in The Good Lawyer.

Joni DeGroot (portrayed by Kennedy McMann) is a young, brilliant and dedicated paralegal who suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She works in the law offices of Franklin Maxwell & Associates under the direction of veteran attorney Janet Stewart (portrayed by Felicity Huffman).

as dr Shaun Murphy (portrayed by Freddie Highmore) is seeking Janet’s legal counsel for his upcoming malpractice lawsuit, Joni catches his attention because her condition reminds him of himself, as he suffers from autism and savant syndrome. Everyone has ignored him, but his condition allows him to envision brilliant surgical procedures that have helped him and his team save countless lives.

Joni is dying to ask Shaun how to deal with one of her obsessions. In exchange, she confronts him about giving up so easily on the malpractice rule. Shaun is very intrigued by her.

Shaun notes that Joni has repetitive intrusive thoughts that cause anxiety, which she manages with ritualistic behaviors — like tapping on things three times. Shaun entrusts her skills to his case because it allows her to focus on things that others might overlook. So he fires Janet as lead counsel and hires Joni to represent him in his misconduct case.

Joni’s OCD is so severe that it interferes with her private life. For example, in the backdoor pilot episode, her boss Janet talks to her, but Joni is unable to focus on the conversation because a law book is out of place. Janet points out that she can’t handle simple things and questions her ability to take on a legal case on her own. Especially her first case…

In an interview, Kennedy describes her character as follows: “She’s unique, she’s eager, excitable and whip smart. It is a database of information. She’s sticking to details… and part of that is because she suffers from OCD.” McMann continues, “It’s certainly had an impact on her personal and professional life. Due to the nature of her rituals, she occasionally has trouble getting things done on time. I think she has a tendency to make people a little uncomfortable with what she’s going through, but other than that… she’s funny, loving, and she’s passionate and eager to help.”

Kennedy McMann suffered from OCD in real life and has made a significant recovery, bringing a real aspect to the character. We expect Joni to overcome her OCD enough to represent clients (beyond Shaun Murphy), but it will offer challenges in many settings (and even some explosions, as Shaun experiences). It will open a realm of understanding, awareness and compassion for the community functionally suffering from OCD.

Release date of the TV series The Good Lawyer.

ABC hasn’t officially announced a release date yet The good doctor spinoff series. Executive producers David Shore and Liz Friedman confirm the expansion into The Good universe. The crossover episode The good doctor is a great way to introduce the pilot to large audiences with common interests. We speculate on the complete series Release in summer 2023!
