Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields will fight in September with promoter Ben Shalom confirming a deal has been struck for their undisputed middleweight title fight.

Marshall and Shields share a fierce rivalry dating back to the former’s win over the American in 2012 during their amateur days.

Shields would win two Olympic gold medals before turning pro and winning world titles in three weight classes – reigning in two of them as undisputed – with that loss to Marshall being the only blemish on her record.

Their fight was supposed to take place in July but an arm injury forced the Brit to undergo minor surgery, putting those plans on hold.

Shields is looking to repeat her boxing success in the MMA cage after signing a contract with the Professional Fighters League in 2020. The 27-year-old is looking to fight for promotion again later this year, giving the Marshall a tight-time frame fight.

However, Marshall’s promoter Shalom is now confident the fight is set to take place in September.

“This fight should be in the first or second week of September,” Shalom said in the name of Bet365.

“This fight is pretty much settled now. Obviously a huge fight that we’ve been preparing for a long time and I can’t wait.

“I think this fight will be bigger than expected when it comes. Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano was very big with a crowd of Irish and Puerto Rican fans in New York but this is Britain vs USA, two big characters, lots of history and a great narrative.

Shields meanwhile also believes the fight will take place in early September, but has warned further delays will see her walking away.

“If it doesn’t happen [by] September 3, Savannah Marshall needs to find someone else to play with,” Shields said. ‘That’s it.

“The fact that I’ve allowed it to be postponed to September gives her enough time to heal and get ready from her injury and we can continue the fight.

“She says he’ll KO me in two rounds, so it shouldn’t take too long.”

Shields was in the UK on Tuesday as the PFL announced two major back-to-back 2022 playoffs will be played in Cardiff and London this summer.

The 2022 PFL playoffs begin Friday, August 5 in New York City before the league heads across the Atlantic to Cardiff on Saturday, August 13, with the final playoff event on Saturday, August 20 in taking place in London’s Copper Box Arena.
