The family mourns the death of the Fort Lauderdale preschool teacher in a shooting on I-95

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A family mourns the loss of a loved one after a Fort Lauderdale preschool teacher was shot dead in a traffic rampage on Sunday night.

Ana Estevez, who teaches at Nurtury Montessori School in Fort Lauderdale, died from her injuries after being shot Sunday night while driving on Interstate 95 in Broward County, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters took Estevez, 23, to Broward Health Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Estevez’s cousin Gabby Huerta told Local 10 News’ Trent Kelly that her family is still in shock from the incident.

“Our heart, like the heart of our family, is broken — it’s so broken right now,” Huerta said. “You can never imagine that something like this would happen.”

“Ana and her boyfriend Michael had traveled to North Carolina. On the way home they were run over by a white BMW. Before he could stop, the stranger opened fire,” Paula Ulerio wrote on a GoFundMe donation page.

Deputies released a sketch of the suspect who shot at I-95.

Estevez, who was also a student at Florida Atlantic University and cared for both her mother and grandmother, was driving a southbound Nissan Sentra near Broward Boulevard.

Investigators released the sketch of a suspect sitting in a white BMW i8. They believe he was also involved in a shooting on I-95 between Atlantic Boulevard and Sample Road.

“I love her so much,” Huerta said. “We know death happens, but not like this and not with this man who’s still out here. Who knows what he might do to someone else.”

Detectives asked anyone with information about the case to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
