They found that those who drank three to four drinks a week reduced their risk of the disease by more than five percent compared to non-drinkers.

Experts say that sensible alcohol consumption in this age group can reduce the chances of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Earlier analysis by the same scientific group in 2018 sparked controversy after claiming no alcohol at all is best for health.

But the latest report in the Lancet notes that middle-aged adults can safely enjoy up to two drinks a day.

And for those over 70, the alcohol limit is even higher, with three small glasses of wine or bottles of beer a day being good for your health.

But it’s bad news for young adults, as experts warn that booze puts them at higher risk of injury.

Anything more than one drink per week for men under 40 increased the risk of injury, while for young women it was a maximum of two.

The researcher dr. Emmanuela Gakidou of the Washington University School of Medicine said, “Our message is simple: Young people shouldn’t drink, but older people can benefit from drinking small amounts.”

It is the first study to examine alcohol risk by geographic region, age, gender and year. And the results suggest that counseling should be tailored to age groups.

British adults are currently advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week, around six pints of beer or ten small glasses of wine.

A separate study in PLOS Medicine claims that drinking more than seven drinks a week increases the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
