At The endgame season 1 episode 3the action had taken place in three different places. In flashbacks, we saw Owen meeting Elena and Sergey for the first time in 2016 in Rosario Argentina. In modern times, we’ve seen Owen and Sergey plotting in prison, and Val and Elena fighting over a hostage in one of the banks.
At the beginning of the episode, the news channel ENN reports on the seven banks in New York City that are still under siege. Leading news anchor Tyler Erickson notes that he and America are tired of waiting for answers about who is to blame.
Meanwhile, Anthony informs Val that he hasn’t found much connecting her husband Owen to Sergey and Elena, but that the photo they took together appears to be from his mission to Argentina in 2016. Owen was shot.
In a flashback to 2016, Elena and Sergey meet Owen for the first time under his alias Peter Shepherd after chasing her. Elena can tell from his movements that Owen is not carrying a gun, and she and Sergey negotiate a fake gun deal with him.
When another man enters the restaurant, Owen asks Elana if she always looks over her shoulder. She informs him that two men have entered who have identical tattoos behind their ears and are definitely carrying guns. Elena tells Sergey She doesn’t believe in coincidencesjust as the two men begin shoot at their table.
Owen, Sergey and Elena manage to survive, but Owen is shot and badly injured. When he passes out, he begs Elena not to leave him there and let him die. Eventually he wakes up with Sergey and Elena in a safe place and the bullets have been removed from his body.
When he comes to, Owen discovers this Sergey and Elena knew all along that he was an FBI agent. They tell him they want a partnership with him, but Owen refuses, telling them that if they don’t let him go, his wife will come, and they don’t want that.
Back in Fort Worth, Val returns to question Elena. She reveals that she knows when Owen met Elena and her husband, but claims that Owen never actually worked with them because he wasn’t a dirty agent. Elena tells her that Owen never got dirty, he just changed his mind about his employers.
Before Val can interrogate her further, Elena begins another story, this one about two friends who have been torn apart by violence. As she recounts, a gunman in Bank 5 takes a female hostage and locks her in an airtight bank vault. If she’s not released the hostage will suffocate in four hours.
Val’s boss, Agent Doak, wants to gas the bank and put everyone to sleep so the FBI can take control, and doesn’t think they have enough time to wait for Elena’s demands. The ENN newscast is momentarily interrupted and a recorded message from Elena plays on screen.
Elena tells news anchor Tyler Erickson to come to the bank, and only then will she release the hostage. She claims that at the end of the day, despite her methods, everyone will thank her and understand she’s not the bad guy In this scenario.
Outside Bank 5, Val Tyler asks Erickson why Elena wants him to come to the bank and is unfazed by his assumption that he is the “Most Trustworthy Man in America.” Once inside, Tyler is ambushed with a question by one of the gunmen. If he doesn’t answer, the hostage dies.
On camera in the bank, the shooter asks Tyler to tell them about the swan, but Tyler claims he has no idea what they’re talking about. Outside, Agent Doak prepares to gas the bank, despite not having received permission yet, and orders the air ducts in the bank to be opened.
Unconvinced by Tyler’s story, Val remarks to the bank that there is smoke in a small storage room. The name of the storage unit happens to be French for swan. As she and Anthony track down the fire They find the body of a young woman, Ming Lee, in a freezer in the storage unit.
After finding no leads at Ming Lee’s mother’s house, Val runs out of time to connect her and Tyler Erickson before Detective Doak gasses the bank or the hostage dies. In the bank, armed men take the cash out of the drawers and move furniture around. Then they start blindfolding other hostages.
Once again, Elena interrupts the ENN broadcast and invites the crowd on the streets to come to Bank 5 and see what Tyler Erickson has done. In Fort Worth, the director of the FBI warns Elena that if anyone is killed in the bank, he will kill one of her men. Elena responds by warning him that if one of her people is killed in his gas attack, she will retaliate in kind.
Elena reminds the principal that this is a story about two friends as he gives Agent Doak permission to gas the bank. Before Doak can do so, power is shorted out across the block, and when the FBI raids the bank, they find it The gunmen escaped through the air ducts that Doak so kindly opened up to her again.
Agents rush to rescue the hostage in the vault, a young woman named Arushi. As Val, Doak and Anthony try to hunt down the hostages, cash rains out of the bank’s windows and they find all of the gunmen’s masks in a heap on the street.
While everyone is being evacuated, Val questions Tyler about Ming Lee. He denies knowing her and becomes defensive, making Val even more suspicious. Remembering that there are no coincidences, Val questions the hostage Arushi, who came all the way to this bank because a manager called her about identity theft.
It turns out that Arushi was friends with Ming Lee and they lived in the same building before Ming disappeared. Arushi is not surprised to hear that Ming was murdered as she was working on a big story and tells Val that before she disappeared she sent Arushi four numbers, 1164.
Val finds safe deposit box number 1164 in bank five, and inside are detailed documents Ming Lee’s examination of Tyler Erickson. Erickson was involved in a Ukrainian crime family called Belock’s, which Elena and Sergey Owen warned about in Argentina in 2016.
Realizing that Val already has Tyler’s DNA from a comb he used before he went on camera, Val elaborates on the killing, blaming him for killing Ming and covering it up so the story wouldn’t get out. Tyler quickly relents and confesses that he called the Locks to cover up Ming’s murder after he killed her.
In a recent ENN broadcast, Elena reminds the American people that she always keeps her promises as Tyler walks out in handcuffs in front of a crowd of press. In Fort Worth, Elena tells Val that the locks are a complicated affair, but that Owen got his ball from them in Argentina.
As Elena tries to convince Val that they are on the same side, Val reminds her that Elena will eventually slip now that Val is learning her patterns. Elena agrees that eventually she will, but not now. At home, Val reminisces about Owen’s return from Argentina and discovers the four-leaf clover he gave her on her last visit to prison.
On the bookshelf next to the shamrock is a book with an identical four-leaf clover sticker on its spine. Val opens the book and finds a flash drive, which we have to assume Owen left her.
Meanwhile, in prison, Sergey mentions to Owen that a man he used to know has become an inmate, a problem because he should be dead. Owen is concerned, but Sergey reassures him that everything will be fine.
Later, on the basketball court, the man (Horek) recognizes Sergey and tries to approach him. Sergey claims to be a man named Collins and Horek suddenly remembers that the man in front of him can’t be Sergey because he knows it Sergei is dead. He hurries away.
Owen asks Sergey about Horek and tells him their timeline can’t be messed up because Sergey was recognized. Undeterred, Sergey tells Owen he’ll take care of it like he always does…
