A drum teacher told yesterday how he got to play on stage with American rockers The Killers – after holding up a sign at a concert.

Kyle Grieve, who works as a barman, has been a huge fan of the band since 2004 when their first album was released.

He was in the crowd at a performance at Falkirk Stadium in Stirlingshire on Monday night, holding a sign that read ‘May I play the drums?’.

And the following night, he was allowed to replace drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. after receiving frontman Brandon Flowers’ seal of approval.

Die-hard fan Kyle, from Leith, Edinburgh, attended both concerts and made another mark for Tuesday night’s gig.

And his dreams came true when the 28-year-old took the stage with the band for the song “For Reasons Unknown.”

Drum teacher Kyle, who also plays with local bands Posable Action Figures and Retro Video Club, said yesterday he wants to perform his own music in front of 25,000 people.

He added, “I knew that on the song ‘For Reasons Unknown’ the band usually gets someone from the audience to play drums, so I made a sign that said ‘May I play drums?’ and held it up.

“Brandon saw the sign and said to me, ‘If you’re going to come up here, you have to mean business.’

“So I wrote a second sign for the next night that said, ‘Tonight I’m serious.’

“As soon as he walked on stage, Brandon saw it immediately, pointed at me and invited me onto the stage.

“I was shaking when he called me, my stomach cramped.

“I was four rows from the front and one of the crew led me over the barrier – we had to walk around the stage.

He added: “I’ve wanted this since 2004 when they released their first album.

“Brandon came up to me afterwards and said, ‘That was great’.” And Kyle added, “In the middle of the song, Brandon asked me how much I was charging per week.

“I said I asked less than Ronnie.”
