Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his return to public life with an 8-minute video message that made no mention of the sexual harassment scandal that caused him to resign.
In the video, posted to Vimeo by his longtime political ally Rich Azzopardi on Wednesday, Cuomo, 64, announced plans to create a Political Action Committee (PAC), launch a campaign to pass gun control measures and an informal weekly podcast to host.
Cuomo resigned in disgrace in August 2021, weeks after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report detailing complaints of sexual harassment from 11 women during his tenure as governor.
After many years of working around the clock in the public service, I’ve recently spent time engaging in something called life,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo said he has spent the past year spending time with his daughters, mother, sister and brother Chris, who was fired from his job at CNN when his role in advising the governor was exposed by his scandal came.
Cuomo announced that he is forming a PAC to “elect the right people into office.”
“I want to move forward and focus on what’s really important,” Cuomo said. “I’ve fought the good fight in government and politics all my life, and I’m not done fighting.”
Cuomo said the PAC will focus on electing candidates with a proven track record of driving legislative outcomes and condemned politicians he said were “pandering” voices on social media, which he called “a political Roman coliseum.” .
“No one is talking, everyone is shouting, and no one believes anyone … It’s more about partisan and personal politics than sensible and smart politics,” he said.
Cuomo also announced that he is founding the Gun Safe America Project to fight gun violence.
“I don’t think our federal government has the guts or the ability to make any real progress.”
He referred to the 1994 assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004 and has not been renewed since. The House enacted a similar ban in 2013, but the measure was defeated by a 40-60 vote in the Senate.
“Well, we can’t even do that,” Cuomo said.
Cuomo appeared to condemn a bill signed into law by President Joe Biden in June that left out a total ban on assault weapons or magazine capacity limits.
“Democrats wouldn’t even get the assault rifle ban bill on the floor with Democrats united to show Republicans are stopping passage,” he said. “At least then we could frame the issue for the American people… We need a new approach and I have some ideas.”
Cuomo also announced he’ll be hosting a weekly podcast “to have a conversation with you.”
Cuomo wasn’t sure how that would work in podcast form, only mentioning that the show would have “different formats” and be more informal in nature.
“My intention is to tell the full truth, unvarnished inside out, open and frank,” he said. He added that he “knows these people and knows their games” and described himself as “a person who actually did the job”.
Wednesday’s message marks the ex-governor’s clearest attempt to rehabilitate his image since he stepped down from disfavor a year ago.
Cuomo was acquitted of criminal misconduct in January 2022 when the Oswego County District Attorney dropped the county’s sexual harassment case against him for lack of evidence.
However, the district attorneys investigating his criminal cases stressed that they believed his prosecutors to be credible and truthful in the allegations detailed in the attorney general’s report.
“I found her dependable and reasonable, apparently motivated only by a sincere desire to do the right thing, and she was clearly upset with her interaction with then-Governor Cuomo,” Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes said after completing his investigation would have.
“This investigation highlights what victims, their attorneys, police and prosecutors have been saying for years: Current New York sex crime laws do not adequately hold offenders accountable and do not adequately protect victims,” Oakes said.
Cuomo still faces two civil lawsuits from two women he allegedly molested, including a state police officer who served in his protection detail and Charlotte Bennett, his former associate.
