The Data & Trust Alliance team is fighting artificial intelligence bias in hiring


Backed by some of the nation’s biggest companies, Data & Trust Coalition Group are struggling with an artificial intelligence bias in the workforce.

The union reports that the organizations it works for have found unfair bias to be one of the highest risks in using algorithms and AI for workforce decisions . That may include hiring workers.

This drive is intended to prevent technology from yielding biased results and prevent potential discrimination.

Fourteen companies have committed to applying criteria — or safeguards — to minimize data and algorithmic bias in human capital and workforce decisions, including recruitment, compensation and staff development.

Those companies include American Express, CVS Health, Deloitte, Diveplane, General Motors, Humana, IBM, Mastercard, Nike, Meta (Facebook’s parent company), Nike, Nielsen, Under Armor and Walmart. The union revealed that these companies employ more than 3.5 million people. In addition, many of the alliance companies are evaluating the protections and are expected to adopt them soon.

The alliance points out that most of the algorithmic systems used to support workforce decisions are introduced and maintained by vendors, including software vendors, websites professionals, benefit planners and recruitment agencies.

According to the alliance, its Algorithmic Bias Protections have four components. These include an assessment with 55 questions in 13 categories to be completed by the HR provider; education and evaluation including providing detailed guidance to personnel teams assessing supplier response to the audit; scorecard that includes sorting and comparing suppliers; and finally, take protective measures.

All told, the union revealed there were more than 200 experts involved in the creation of the safeguards.

Kenneth Chenault, the group’s co-chairman and former president and chief executive officer of American Express, said, “It’s not just about applying principles, but actually doing something concrete. ,” New York Times reported.

Reflecting the alliance’s new initiative, Nuala O’Connor, Senior Vice President, chief counsel, digital citizenship, Walmart, told the union, “This is not just an anti-bias tool.
