Palmer Luckey, the outspoken creator of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, has a new idea.

It’s a virtual reality headset tied to a video game that will kill you on purpose if you die in the game.

In a blog post about the NerveGear, Luckey explained that the system intentionally links the real and virtual worlds together and adds the “threat of serious consequences.” [that] can make a game feel real to you and everyone else in the game.’

The former Oculus boss said the headset comes with “explosive charging modules, which I usually use for another project” to fry its wearer’s brain when they’re not very good at video games.

Luckey says he hasn’t tried the system himself because he’s still working on the bugs.

“The good news is that we are halfway to making a real NerveGear. The bad news is I’ve only found the half that kills you so far. The perfect VR half of the equation was many years ago,” he wrote.

“Of course, this is not a perfect system. I have plans for tamper protection which, like the NerveGear, will make it impossible to remove or destroy the headset. Despite this, there are a variety of errors that can appear and kill the user at the wrong time. Because of this, I didn’t break the balls to actually use it myself.’

Such a headset would of course bring an increased focus on being good at video games. And a number of murder cases.

Luckey announced the system to commemorate the events of an anime called Sword Art Online, in which unlucky players are thrown into a virtual dungeon and must fight their way out. As you can imagine, if they die in the game, they die in real life.

We’ll probably just stick with Animal Crossing, to be honest.
