The boss’s text to the worker who called in sick sparks a debate

On Thursday, a TikToker revealed screenshots of confusing texts from her boss, who appeared to have fired her for calling in sick, sparking controversy over sick leave and workplace misunderstandings.

The viral video, which has over 4.4 million views and was posted by TikToker D (@doublesidedadapter), shows TikToker reacting to screenshots of a text message she allegedly received from her boss.

“I called today because I wasn’t feeling well at all last night and this morning and my boss texted me those words,” the TikToker captioned the video.

“Hey, I think I have food poisoning or something. I can’t come in, sorry,” the TikToker wrote to her boss, according to the screenshot.

“OK, no problem. Don’t come back, it’s slow,” her boss replied.

Viewers in the viral TikTok’s comments section debated whether the boss fired the TikToker in the lyrics, with some saying it appeared to be a misunderstanding.

“I really think he’s just saying don’t worry it’s slow,” commented one user.

In subsequent videos, the TikToker explains that her boss doesn’t speak perfect English and that she’s not sure if the text means she’s fired. Afterward, she texted him to clarify if she should come into work the next day, but was still confused by his reply, which read, “No, came back, no problem.” Some users thought the follow-up text confirmed it that she was fired.

“Is English his first language? Because if not – then he definitely didn’t mean to come back,” commented one user.

“Do you seriously think I’m fired?” says the TikToker in response.

The TikToker posted her “latest update” video on the situation and said she didn’t go in person or call her boss to clarify if she was fired. She says she sent him a final message asking if she could come in and he allegedly said no. However, she says that tomorrow she will go to work for a paycheck and find out what happened.

She also explains that she has called several times over the past few months and that she wouldn’t be surprised if her sick leave was an excuse to fire her for being a bad employee. She says her job is boring, so she often doesn’t do well, and also says it’s a side job and not very important to her.

“I’m definitely not giving this job everything I should,” shares the TikToker. “I like it, feel so disconnected from my colleagues and this job in general.”

In the comments, many users criticized the TikToker for not calling her boss to clarify if she was fired. Some users also criticized her for calling in sick multiple times.

“As a manager, that made me angry. Just ask,” one user complained.

“Honestly I get asked a couple of times if you need to come in, comes across as super unprofessional. The first call is fine but if you ask a few times it will do the trick,” another insulted.

“I wasn’t fine. I don’t know why I have to justify being sick,” the TikToker replied. “You don’t know someone else’s body. You don’t know if they’re really sick or not… To see.” how people are mad at me is such a weird feeling.”

However, others shared their similar experience of being punished at work for requesting sick leave, and many came to TikToker’s defense.

“A similar story happened to me – I had Dr. notes/evidence that I wasn’t lying about my swollen foot, I was fired about a text message,” shared one user.

“You all say, ‘I was super sick and still went to work for an 8-hour shift,’ or whatever extra hell is. Everyone is different,” commented one user.

Many have expressed concern about the lack of paid sick leave and worker protections in the United States. In relation to the spread of COVID-19 in particular, workers have expressed concerns that their colleagues may not be able to take time off, putting one another at risk of illness.
