The border areas of Venezuela and Colombia are hopeful as reopening looms

SAN JUAN DE COLON, Venezuela – Official cross-border trade between Venezuela and Colombia has all but ground to a halt since 2015, when Venezuela’s socialist president closed border crossings after years of deteriorating relations with Colombia’s conservative governments.

Now leftist Gustavo Petro will be inaugurated as Colombia’s president on Sunday and promises to normalize ties with Venezuela, and optimism is mounting along the border that border crossings will reopen.

Still, business owners and residents know that meaningful vehicular activity doesn’t resume overnight.

Venezuela’s economic woes have only worsened since border trade was halted.

Roads and bridges on the Venezuelan side are in poor condition. Venezuelan truckers lack the necessary permits. And their colleagues in Colombia want security guarantees.
