The best bar in North America, this New York speakeasy is known for its signature cocktails

If you want to visit the best bar this side of the Atlantic, according to a poll, you need to book a trip to New York City.

Attaboy, a Manhattan hangout dubbed an “intimate speakeasy,” was named the best hangout in the inaugural North America Top 50 Bars poll. This was announced in New York on Tuesday evening.

William Reed, the media company behind the new poll, also publishes annual reports on the world’s 50 best bars and the world’s 50 best restaurants.

Since opening about a decade ago, Attaboy has been acclaimed for its laid-back approach. The bar doesn’t have a formal menu, but instead guests discuss their drink preferences with the bartenders, who then craft something accordingly. New York Magazine called it a flag bearer the city’s craft cocktail scene.

In a statement, Mark Sansom, content director for the 50 Best Bars survey, said that despite his modest size, Attaboy “has had an outsized impact on how we drink, not just in New York and the United States, but globally.”

Attaboy wasn’t the only New York spot to make the list. Overall, the city, long known as the Bar Mecca, claimed 11 of the 50 spots, the most of any spot. Others who made the cut were Katana Kitten (#4) and Dante (#8). Katana Kitten ranked highest among American bars – at number 10 – in the most recent list of the best bars in the world. In 2019, Dante claimed, “world’s best bar” title in another industry program.

Mexico City also featured heavily on the list of North America’s 50 Best Bars, with six spots making the jump. Among them were Handshake Speakeasy (#2) and Licoreria Limantour (#3).
