Reno, NV: Actor Jeremy Renner was helping a stranded motorist when he was injured in a snow plow accident in the mountains on the outskirts of Reno over the weekend, according to the city’s mayor.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said the 51-year-old said avenger star was trying to help a stranded car outside his home on the side of a snow-capped mountain on New Year’s Day when he was hit by his own vehicle. The accident left Renner in critical but stable condition with chest and orthopedic injuries.
“He helped someone stranded in the snow,” Schieve said Reno Gazette Journal. She said she and the actor are friends and that she was called about the accident shortly after the accident Sunday morning (US time) near the Mt. Rose Highway, which connects Reno to Lake Tahoe.
“He’s always helping others,” she told the newspaper.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that deputies were responding to a report of a traumatic injury in the Mt. Rose Highway area around 9 a.m. Sunday before Renner was flown by helicopter to a local hospital. A violent winter storm dumped more than 600 meters of snow on the area during the night from Saturday to Sunday morning.
The sheriff’s office said at the time that Renner was the “sole person involved in the incident” and that the department’s major accident investigation team was reviewing the circumstances.
Sheriff Darin Balaam scheduled a news conference Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (9:30 a.m. Wednesday AEDT) to clarify details of the sheriff’s office’s response to the accident, the office said in a statement.
Earlier, a publicist for Renner said in a statement that he suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and remained in critical but stable condition in an intensive care unit after undergoing surgery at a Reno hospital.
