The attorneys are meeting the day before the final argument begins in the Parkland school shooter’s punishment phase

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The case of the Parkland school shooter is expected to appear before a jury this week.

On Monday, the prosecution and defense will relay the judge’s instructions to the jury.

The closing arguments in the penalty phase are scheduled for Tuesday.

The 12 jurors are then expected to begin deliberations on Wednesday and decide whether to recommend that Nikolas Cruz be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or death.

Legal analyst David Weinstein says the jury has a lot to consider.

“You have to focus on weighing what has been presented to you 17 times – you have 17 different judgments to make here,” he said.

The prosecutor rested on August 4th after 91 witnesses called in 12 daysand the public defenders trying to save his life rested on September 14 after Call of 26 witnesses 11 days.

Cruz pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder last year. The murder counts allowed for only two sentences: life in prison without the possibility of parole or death.

Florida requires a jury’s unanimous vote to recommend death for each of the 17 murder counts. The defense aims to convince one of the 12 jurors to choose life on all 17 murder counts so Cruz can avoid execution.

After the jury makes its recommendation to the court, the final decision will rest in the hands of Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer.

If Scherer sentences Cruz to death and he has exhausted all legal remedies, Cruz faces execution.
