The 8 best original Xbox games of all time

To put it simply, the original Xbox was revolutionary.

After Sega and Atari both retired from the console market, it looked like Nintendo and Sony would dominate the scene unchallenged.

In March 2000, however, it became clear that this would not be the case when Microsoft announced the Xbox. It launched in November 2001 and quickly took the world by storm.

In recent years, Microsoft’s influence has shaped the gaming industry in countless ways.

Game Pass, cloud storage, and in-game voice chat are ubiquitous today thanks to Xbox innovations.

However, innovation alone won’t sell a console, and the original Xbox has a fantastic selection of games. It was hard to pick the best ones, but here they are.

Burnout 3: Takedown

Clean and fun racing games like Gran Turismo are all well and good, but sometimes you want to throw a little more chaos into the mix.

Burnout 3’s arcade-style racing is top notch, but the real fun of the game comes from the brilliant crash modes.

Throwing your car onto an intersection and watching the chaotic chain of events unfold is endlessly entertaining. It’s a formula that quirky games like Turbo Dismount would later use with great success.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Because Xbox was owned by Microsoft, it was in a unique position to receive many high-quality PC ports in quick succession.

This RPG, developed in part by Bioware, is considered the forerunner of the excellent Mass Effect series, but it’s also one of the best Star Wars games of all time.

It might not have been the messiah of games director Peter Molyneux promised, but Fable is still a groundbreaking RPG.

It’s overwhelmingly British in its presentation, which is exactly what has made it so popular with so many fans worldwide.

In this delightful game, you can go on great adventures, explore a beautiful world, or start a little romance for yourself.

With a new Fable game in the works, it’s the perfect time to go back and see the brilliance of the original.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

With Metal Gear Solid returning to stores very soon, going back and playing the classics seems like a great idea.

This version of MGS2 adds a ridiculous 500 new missions in VR training mode and some cool additions to the main story.

Even without the new stuff, MGS2 is still one of the best games of all time and is always worth playing again.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

If you’ve ever wanted a reminder of the days when games were really difficult and you didn’t hold hands all the time, Morrowind will set you straight.

Retro feel aside, here’s the birth of Bethesda’s modern world design.

Oblivion, Skyrim, and New Vegas all owe their brilliant open worlds to Morrowind and his dedication to exploration.

halo 2

You could pick any Halo game for this list and it would be a fair choice, but Halo 2 only has the edge due to its innovation.

Halo 2 made online multiplayer very special as one of the best arena shooters in history.

If that’s not enough, the single-player campaign is still among the best for first-person shooters, with unforgettable environments and clever level design.

half-life 2

The Half-Life series is most associated with PC gaming, but it’s a testament to how good the original Xbox was that its port of Half-Life 2 is every bit as good as the PC version.

Any console naysayers were soon put in their place by the showcase of Half-Life 2’s physics engine, puzzle solving, and seamless combat.

Soul Calibur II

Fighting games went out of fashion in the early 2000s, but that didn’t stop SoulCalibur from thriving as a franchise during that time.

With a larger cast of characters, beautiful stage design, and smoother combat than ever before, SoulCalibur’s place on Mount Rushmore of fighting games was undeniable.
