A 22-year-old man has been arrested after three people were shot dead in an accident Shopping center in Denmark takes place in a psychiatric facility.
At least seven people were hit by bullets when a man opened fire with a rifle at shoppers in the multi-storey shopping center south of Copenhagen on Sunday afternoon.
The suspect, who also had a knife, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.
After a two-hour hearing, he was committed to a “closed psychiatric ward,” Logal police tweeted.
They previously said he had mental health issues and no evidence of a terrorist motive.
The shooter reportedly fired indiscriminately, “not motivated by gender or anything else.”
Denmark allows civilians to own handguns and semi-automatic rifles with special licenses for specific activities such as gathering and hunting, although automatic weapons are banned outright.
License holders must be at least 18 years of age and pass background checks on their criminal and mental health records.
The Field shopping center is popular with young people as it is close to a secondary school and a large student block.
According to local authorities, the deceased were a man in his 40s, a young man and a young woman.
Of the four survivors – a mix of Danish and Swedish men and women aged 16 to 50 – one remained in critical condition as of Monday afternoon.
Men, women and children were seen fleeing the mall after the attack while armed officers rushed to the scene.
Some of them said they hid in restrooms, shops and storerooms after hearing the shots.
A survivor named Isabelle told Danish media: “All of a sudden we hear gunshots – 10 gunshots I think – and then we run through the mall and end up in a toilet where we huddle together in this tiny toilet where we’re about 11 people.
“It’s really hot and we’re waiting and really scared. It was a horrible experience.”
British singer Harry Styles was due to perform at a concert venue less than a mile away later that evening. The performance was canceled after the tragedy.
In a Snapchat message, he wrote: “My team and I are praying for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I’m shocked.’
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday: “Denmark was hit by a ferocious attack on Sunday evening. Several were killed.
‘More wounded. Innocent families shopping or eating out. children, adolescents and adults.
“Our beautiful and otherwise so secure capital was changed in a fraction of a second. I would like to encourage the Danes to stick together and support each other during this difficult time.”
