The $100 million Swan River Bike Bridge over McCallum Park is awaiting City of Victoria Park approval

The construction of a $100 million bicycle bridge over the Swan River is subject to the developer getting council approval to build over McCallum Park.

Victoria Park councilors will vote on an official’s recommendation on whether to allow Main Roads WA to submit plans for a Causeway pedestrian and bicycle bridge to be built across the city’s park at a meeting on September 20.

The park would house the infrastructure for the bridge, connecting walkways, lighting and landscaping.

Measuring 1km long and 6m wide, the bridge would reach 4m at its highest point, providing safer access for the 1400 cyclists and 1900 pedestrians who use the path on the existing Causeway Bridge each day.

The council will also vote to allow the MRWA to construct a temporary common path on the city’s public space along Garland Street. After the construction period, the temporary path is to be removed and the area restored.

A community group uses a shed on the site, according to a city report, but it will not be impacted by the project.

Upon receiving Council approval for the development application, MRWA will submit it to the City, which will forward it to WA’s Planning Commission for evaluation and recommendation to a development evaluation board.

The city has 42 days to submit its recommendation to the WAPC. It intends to conduct a community consultation for 28 days before forwarding its recommendation to the WAPC.

The WAPC is responsible for evaluating the application and making a recommendation to the Metro Inner South Joint Development Assessment Panel.

Civmec SWC WSP Alliance will design and build the bridge under a contract valued at approximately $55 million.

The project, funded jointly by the state and federal governments, includes two cable bridges and access slopes connecting the Victoria Park foreshore to Heirisson Island and Perth’s CBD.

The design pays tribute to the Aboriginal history and culture of the region.
