‘That looks pretty tough’: Daniel Ricciardo is happy he’s not wearing Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen’s shoes after their controversial finish at the Abu Dhabi GP

Daniel Ricciardo feels that the ending of GP Abu Dhabi is not right and he is glad he was not a part of it.

The final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP was one of the most controversial moments in recent F1 history. With five laps remaining, Lewis Hamilton led the race with rival Max Verstappen 11 seconds behind him.

The Briton won his 8th World Title of course, and Verstappen’s hit to the top looked bleak.

During the same lap, Nicholas Latifi crashed into the fence, and the safety car was deployed. Verstappen went into the soft-tire pits and showed up with five overturned cars between him and Hamilton. Initially, the drivers swerved to stay behind the safety vehicle, maintaining formation.

However, just before the final lap, race director Michael Masi ordered those cars to pass SC. This leaves Verstappen’s Red Bull with softer and fresher tires, placing it right behind Hamilton’s W12 as the race resumes.

In the final shootout, Verstappen overcame the helpless Lewis Hamilton to win the Abu Dhabi GP and his first World Title.

Daniel Ricciardo is glad he didn’t take part in the controversy

After the race, McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo was heard sounding confused about the ending. He doesn’t seem to agree with what happened but is relieved that he didn’t affect it in any way.

“I’m glad I wasn’t part of that, whatever just happened.” Ricciardo said on team radio.

“Looks, uh, pretty nice.” he added.

Mercedes made two different objections shortly after the race ended, but the FIA dismissed both shortly after. The Brackley-based team has announced its intention to appeal but has yet to comment further.

Ricciardo finished Abu Dhabi on the 12th, yet another disappointing result for the McLaren driver. He hasn’t had a solid year with his new team. Besides the 1st place in Monza, Aussie did not finish any races on the podium.
