Ted Cruz was nervous and stormed out of an interview when a journalist confronted him and asked why mass shootings were an American problem.

The Republican senator was at a vigil alongside Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, remembering the victims of the recent Robb Elementary School shooting.

Cruz – who received $176,274 (£140,000) from the National Riffle Association until 2019 – was then confronted with Sky News journalist Mark Stone.

He cornered Mr. Cruz and asked him if it was time to change gun laws in the United States.

Between 2009 and 2018 there were 288 school shootings in the US – the second highest number was in Mexico with eight.

Both Ted Cruz and Gov. Greg Abbott have been staunch allies of liberal gun laws in the US, which Democrats say are fueling the problem of mass shootings in US schools.

They were not met with a frosty reception in Texas, in part because of the state’s traditional support for gun ownership enshrined in the Second Amendment.

When asked by Mark Stone why American exceptionalism was “so awful,” Cruz hit back.

He told Sky News: “You know, I’m sorry you think American exceptionalism is awful. You have your political agenda. God loves you.’

After Stone repeatedly told him, “You can’t answer that,” Cruz turned and said, “Why do people come to America from all over the world? Because it is the freest, wealthiest and safest country on earth. Stop being a propagandist.

“You know, going into politics is easy.

“If a violent psychopath is murdering people, if you want to stop violent crime, the Democrats’ proposals are inevitable — none of them would have stopped it.”

“There are 19 pairs of parents who can never kiss their child tonight.”

The Texas senator then stormed out of the interview and left the scene.

Republicans like Governor Abbott don’t see gun laws as a problem.

Instead, he blamed gunman Salvador Ramos’ mental health for the massacre.

During a later interview, Cruz echoed that sentiment speaking to CNN, saying, “When there’s a killer of that nature, you inevitably see politicians trying to politicize him, you see Democrats and a lot of people in the media, their instant fix in that.” attempts to limit the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.’
