The Texas elementary school where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers is being demolished, officials in Uvalde said.

During a city council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Don McLaughlin was asked by an attendee if Robb Elementary School would be demolished.

“To my knowledge — I had a discussion with the superintendent — the school is going to be demolished,” McLaughlin said. “We could never ask a child to go back or a teacher to ever go to this school again.”

The mayor did not say when demolition would begin.

Public anger at the school district police chief has peaked as harrowing new details of the day continue to emerge

His comments come as public anger has peaked at police officers following their delayed response to the May 24 incident. Earlier Tuesday, during a Texas Senate hearing, the state’s chief police officer described the police response as a “pathetic failure.”

“The officers had guns; the kids didn’t have any,” said Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw. “The officers had protective vests, the children didn’t have them. The officers had training, the subjects had none. One hour, 14 minutes and eight seconds – that’s how long the children and teachers in room 111 waited for rescue.

There were enough armed police officers at the scene of the Robb Elementary School shooting to stop the gunman three minutes after he entered the building, McCraw said during the hearing.

Instead, police waited in a hallway for 77 minutes for additional manpower and tactical equipment to arrive before finally storming the classroom and killing the gunman. By then he had already killed 19 children and their two teachers.

Surveillance video also revealed that none of the police officers attempted to enter the classrooms where the gunman was barricaded. Previous reports had indicated that police were unable to enter because the door was locked, which was not the case.

No officer made any effort to enter the room and the lock on the door was broken.

McCraw and much of the Uvalde community have blamed the school district police chief, Peter Arredondo, who was supposed to be the commanding officer at the scene but has said he had no idea he was in charge.

The mayor of Uvalde hit back at McCraw’s claims, saying he continued “lying, leaking, misleading or misrepresenting information” about local police to protect state forces.

“No fewer than eight law enforcement officers were present in the corridor leading to the breaching of the Robb Elementary School door. At each briefing, he omits the number of his own officers and rangers who were on site that day,” McLaughlin said.

“He ignores that during this time every other classroom in the building was safely evacuated by Uvalde peace officers with the support of border police.”

His comments came hours after Uvalde City Council voted against furloughing Arredondo as criticism of his response to the shootings.
