The mother of the shooter who killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school hopes the “innocent children who died” will forgive her.

Adriana Martinez begged for forgiveness and cried in her car while speaking to CNN affiliate Televisa. Through a translator, the late gunman’s mother, Salvador Ramos, 18, said he had “his reasons” and asked for forgiveness.

‘I have no words. I have no words to say. I don’t know what he was thinking. He had his reasons for what he did and please don’t judge him,” she said.

“I just want the innocent children who died to forgive me. Forgive me, forgive my son. I know he had his reasons,’ she said.

When asked what those reasons were, she replied, “To get closer to these kids. Instead of paying attention to the other bad things. I have no words. I do not know.’

Martinez’s own mother was her son’s first victim in Tuesday’s massacre. The teenage gunman shot his grandmother straight in the face before stealing her car and driving to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. There he fatally shot 19 children and two teachers and injured 17 others.

The shooter’s mother, who has also been identified as Adriana Reyes in interviews, has also spoken out about her son not being a violent person.

“My son was not a violent person. I’m surprised by what he did,” the mother told the Daily Mail on Wednesday from a San Antonio hospital.

“I pray for these families. I pray for all these innocent children, yes I am,” she said. ‘They (the children) had no part in it.’

The mother admitted that her son did not have many friends and largely kept to himself. An online friend the shooter texted ahead of the shooting also spoke about never having plans with friends.

The gunman’s father, also Salvador Ramos, said in a separate interview with the Daily Beast that he never expected his son to commit such a horrific act of violence.

“I just want people to know I’m sorry man [for] what my son did.’

“I never expected my son to do something like that,” he said, before adding, “He should have just killed me instead of doing this to anyone.”

He started calling the local jail but soon found that his son had also been killed.

“You killed my baby, man,” he said. “I will never see my son again and you will never see your children again. And that hurts me.’

Ramos reportedly bought two assault rifles in the days after he turned 18, just before he carried out the second-deadliest school shooting in US history. He was killed by police officers at school.
