Terrible moment of car colliding with bike as cyclist is crossing the road – so who’s right?

THIS is the shocking moment a rider crashed into a bike – and the cyclist crashed into his windshield.

Plumber Ian Payne, 68, was turning off a road when the driver emerged from behind a parked van off an island, bounced off the windscreen and fell.

The cyclist, who wore just a baseball cap and no helmet in Portsmouth, Hampshire last month, broke the glass before howling in pain.

Ian, fearing the driver was dead, insisted he wasn’t wrong, yelling at passers-by: “It wasn’t my fault.”

Cyclists are forbidden to ride on sidewalks unless they are on a designated cycle lane in accordance with the rules of the Highway Code.

Father-of-five Ian also claimed the cyclist admitted to drinking before riding but left before police and an ambulance arrived.

He said: “It happened so quickly for me.

“Obviously I was pretty disappointed in him at first but when he told me he wasn’t sober I thought if I was driving down the road with one of my kids in the car it could have been a lot worse.

“I feel like he put other people in danger with his behavior.”

Ian was insisting he was cornering at about 18mph when the bike suddenly appeared.

He said the bike got onto the island from the footpath before it hit him, adding: “He was so fast.

“It was just a shock at first. I turned around and yelled at the guys who fixed the lights, ‘It’s not my fault’, but I guess that was just the shock of the moment.

“I always thought I was a careful driver anyway, he just drove so fast that I could never stop him.

“He had room to stop, so he should have stopped across the street.

“I was shaking a little. It took me a few minutes to get my bearings again because I was feeling a bit in shock.

“It shook me up. I had to have a few cigarettes for the first hour.

“When he went down I thought he was dead because he hit the window with that force. The window pane was smashed straight in.

“The way his head hit it, I just can’t believe he walked away.”

Hampshire Police are investigating.
