Tech Recruiter explains how to host a meeting you’re not prepared for

In a now-viral TikTok, a tech recruiter revealed how to run a work meeting you’re unprepared for.

TikTok user @askthatrecruiter usually posts content with career tips. He posted the viral video in response to TikToker @theyluvrae’s post about being the “youngest” team member having to make a call she “doesn’t know” about.

The content creator demonstrated what to do in this situation by making a skit conducting a virtual meeting. He started the video by thanking everyone for taking the time to participate. Then he jumped into what to say when you’re not sure how to run a meeting.

“There’s a lot planned for today’s agenda, so I’ll have everyone walk around the room, briefly introduce themselves, state their role and flag any agenda items you’d like to raise ahead of time,” said @askthatrecruiter. “That way we can make sure everything is covered.”

The video was viewed more than 41,000 times on the platform in one day. Viewers in the comments section found the tip valuable and thanked @askthatrecruiter for the advice.

“Oops. save that for later,” wrote one viewer.

“This is so helpful,” said a second.

“Love it thanks,” commented a third.

Other viewers shared their own tips for running a meeting.

“Ask beforehand to attend the agenda the first time, keep the agenda thereafter. Let everyone else talk besides YOU because the agenda says so,” advised one person.

“I just did that but I said if anyone needs to jump in for another call we’ll start with your questions or concerns to make sure they’re addressed,” shared a second.

“I would definitely add if everyone can provide what is their highest priority so we can ensure we are devoting the appropriate amount of time to all issues,” commented a third.

However, one viewer raised an important question: “But what if nobody reports anything?”

@askthatrecruiter posted a sketch in response. If no one has anything to add, they “switch it back a gear” and offer to discuss whether or not the style of meeting works for everyone. He then asks workers “what’s on their plate” and what they “hope for” from the meeting, and suggests that they “discuss changes” that can help make meetings “more efficient.”
