Teacher receives rapid COVID test from school as holiday bonus

It’s not uncommon for employees to receive gifts from their employers around the holidays. Sometimes these can take the form of substantial holiday pay. In other cases, a boss may choose to give their employees a small gift as a thank you for the work they’ve done throughout the year.

While some of these gifts can be lackluster, others can be downright confusing, as TikToker and art teacher @lil.yambs learned in a video that currently has over 15,000 views on TikTok.

In the video, @lil.yambs expresses her dismay before showing her gift: a rapid COVID test.

“I’m confused. Is that a joke?” She asks. “I got my Christmas present from school. It’s literally a rapid COVID test.”

As some commenters pointed out, rapid COVID tests are now free for Americans. All you have to do is enter your details on the US government website and up to four free rapid tests per household will be mailed to you.

In addition, schools have been receiving many free rapid tests since January this year. At the time, the Biden administration announced it would distribute 500 million rapid tests to schools across the country while building infrastructure to allow for the distribution of additional tests on a monthly basis Wall Street Journal.

Some commenters claimed they received the same gift from their place of work.

“The district I work for also gave us Covid tests last Christmas. This year…nothing,” wrote one user. “I don’t know what’s worse.”

“We also got COVID tests. Nothing else and unpackaged,” claimed another.

“We also got Covid tests and my boss’s wife baked us cookies, which I’m allergic to,” shared a third.

Other users took the video as an opportunity to share the not-so-great gifts they received from their workplaces.

“I received an unopened bag of microwave popcorn as a thank you gift for the teacher that said, ‘Just stopping by to say thank you for everything you do,'” recalled one user.

“We stuck a rock with googly eyes on it,” said a second. “To make it even better, a kid swiped it off my desk the next day.”

“As a back-to-school gift, they gave us half-dead grass for a year. Like literal grass in a plastic planter. Told us to remember the grass is greener where you water it!” said another TikToker.

Above all, TikTokers wanted @lil.yambs to know that their work is valued, no matter what their school does to show it off.

“So awful. I can’t believe they took the time to get someone to wrap these. You all deserve better,” summarized one user.
