BOSTON (WHDH) — The Sumner Tunnel will be closed for 36 weekends between June and May next year for a massive construction project.
The tunnel, which connects East Boston and Logan Airport to downtown Boston and I-93, will be closed from 11:00 p.m. Friday to 5:00 a.m. Monday during construction.
During the construction period, motorists must expect delays throughout the area. Signage and law enforcement help guide drivers through the site.
The construction work is part of the first phase of the Sumner Tunnel Restoration Project. Inspections by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation have revealed chipped and crumbling concrete, rusted reinforcements, broken light fixtures and other issues in need of repair. MassDOT plans to completely close the tunnel from May to September 2023.
