Student shows on TikTok how much medical school has “aged” him

A student used TikTok to show the apparent physical toll medical school has taken on him, sparking debate among viewers.

The student, Javi Ochoa (@javifromtiktok), showed off a series of photos and selfies from his first medical degree and looked excited. He then contrasted these by showing recent selfies of himself looking tired with bags under his eyes. “How Much Did Med School Age Me: Part 2,” reads the text overlay.

“But the glory days will soon return,” Ochoa continued of the onscreen text, referring to how it looked at the start. He was responding to a comment that claimed he was “20 years old in med school.” Ochoa has over 40,000 followers on the platform.

As of Thursday, the video received about 3.5 million views and more than 2,500 comments.

Several viewers took Ochoa’s video as a sign that they should drop out of medical school and choose a different career.

“Noted not going to med school,” one viewer commented on the video.

“Maybe that’s my sign not to use medicine and do dentistry instead,” said another.

A third commented: “Convinced I’m not interested in medicine anymore.”

One viewer commented that Ochoa ranged in age from 23 to 53, and others said they never let a job stress them out.

“No job will ever make me lose my youth like that, sorry,” said one TikTok user. In response to the comment, Ochoa wrote, “Lol that’s cute.”

The TikToker apparently wasn’t the only user who looked older coming out of med school. Other medical students reported having had similar experiences.

“I lost half my hair during the internship year,” said one user.

“Same… will get botox after graduating…” wrote another.

Others said Ochoa’s dramatic transformation shows just how much stress can affect the body. One viewer said it was ironic that he was in the healthcare industry.

“The irony of the healthcare industry never ceases to amaze me,” the viewer wrote.

Another viewer commented: “I think this really shows what stress can do to the body itself. Stress can kill people faster than eating fried chicken every day.”

Ochoa claimed in a comment that the comments the video received “deserved [him] some hella tik tok” money. “So tune ’em in so bring it haha but don’t be shocked I’m clapping back hahaha,” he wrote.
