(CNN) – The Biden administration has opened the application process for Americans seeking student debt relief in a beta phase starting Friday night, officials told CNN and allowed applicants to sign up beforehand The website is officially unveiled Later this month.

In August, President Joe Biden announced his decision to forgive up to $10,000 in student loan debt for those earning less than $125,000 a year, or up to $20,000 for eligible borrowers who are also Pell recipients Grant’s were.

“Tonight, the Department of Education will begin beta testing the student debt relief website. During the beta testing phase Borrowers can apply for the Biden-Harris administration’s student debt relief program,” a spokesman for the Department of Education told CNN exclusively on Friday.

The website can be reached at: https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application.

Anyone applying for debt relief during the beta will receive a confirmation email, but their application will not be processed until the site officially launches, which is expected at a date to be announced before the end of October. Once processing begins, most qualifying borrowers are expected to receive debt relief within weeks.

The spokesperson continued, “These borrowers will not need to reapply if they submit their application during beta testing, but no applications will be processed until the site officially launches later this month. This testing period will allow the ministry to monitor the performance of the website through real-world usage, test the website before the official launch of the application, refine processes and uncover possible bugs before the official launch.”

Borrowers must have government-held student loans to qualify. In addition to federal direct loans used to pay for an undergraduate degree, federal PLUS loans borrowed from graduate students and parents may also be eligible if the borrower meets income requirements.

Borrowers whose federal student loans are guaranteed by the government but held by private lenders, many of whom were made under the former Federal Family Education Loan program and the Federal Perkins Loan program, are currently excluded — unless a borrower has applied to consolidate these loans into direct loans by 29.09.

Individuals who earned less than $125,000 in 2020 or 2021, and married couples or heads of households who earned less than $250,000 annually during those years are eligible for up to $10,000 of their federal student loan debt. Income limits are based on adjusted gross income.

After submitting the application after the website’s official launch, most qualifying borrowers are expected to receive debt relief within weeks.

Officials said the “goal” is to start processing the debt relief before next January, when student loan payments begin after a multi-year freeze amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Education is facing several Lawsuits challenging student loan forgiveness policy. A U.S. district judge could soon decide whether to temporarily block the program after hearing a request for a temporary restraining order on Wednesday. This could put the student loan termination on hold until the judge makes a final decision on the case.

The Department of Education’s technical team will review the site’s performance in real time, and the site’s beta will have scheduled pauses while the team evaluates what refinements and tweaks are needed, an administration official told CNN in a phone interview, another official addendum that “high demand peaks” are to be expected. Anyone attempting to submit their application during a beta break is encouraged to try again.

While no changes will be made to the application itself, changes could be made to the website software as the tech team tracks how it performs in beta mode.

The application form provides information about debt relief, who qualifies for it, and how it works. It will ask applicants for information, including their full name, social security number, date of birth, phone number, and an email address.

Potential applicants who previously signed up for updates on the student debt relief process will receive an email notifying them of the beta site, and once the site is officially launched, the White House will begin updating its social channels use to spread the message. There are also plans to notify digital creators and influencers in the coming weeks, officials said.
