Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Stranger Things Season 4 Part 2!

Stranger Things fans are confident Max Mayfield will make a full recovery in season 5 after uncovering what they thought was a big clue in the season 4 finale.

In the gripping final episode, Sadie Sinks Max lost her sight and fell into a coma after facing the evil monster Vecna, on top of another agonizing death.

While it’s not yet confirmed if the fan-favorite will return to the Stranger Things universe for the fifth and final chapter, viewers have shared theories that she’ll make a full recovery — and it has everything to do with Stephen King and Peter Straub The Talisman.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Lucas reading the chilling sci-fi novel to his ex-girlfriend while she was in the hospital, and they believe he’ll have a significant role in the next series.

For the unknown, The Talisman follows Jack, a 12-year-old who embarks on an adventure to save his mother, Lily, who is dying of cancer, by finding a crystal called the Talisman.

Jack’s journey takes him simultaneously through the American heartland and “the Territories”, a strange fantasy land set in a universe parallel to that of Jack’s United States, similar to Upside Down.

The people in the Territories have “twins” or parallel individuals in our world. Births, deaths, and other important life events of twins usually happen in parallel. Twins can also switch or migrate to the other world, but only share the body of their alternate universe’s analogue.

On rare occasions, a person can die in one world but not the other, making the survivor a single being with the ability to switch body and mind back and forth between the two worlds.

Stranger Things fans feel like the Duffer brothers are previewing what’s to come in the next chapter and how the gang will try to save Max.

One user told Reddit, “I think the main character’s mother has cancer, so he goes to the territories to find what he needs to help her. He eventually finds it and is able to bring her back and heal her, so I’d definitely say it bodes well for Max’s recovery.

And the theories didn’t stop there as someone else hinted at the possible plot.

“Jack embarks on a quest across the Territories in search of the magical quest item – the Talisman – in order to save his mother’s life,” they wrote.

“His journey to the other world brings back the object that saves her life. Could they tie a bow for one of the Hawkins gang to go to the Upside Down for something to bring Max back? I think this might be a fun way to anticipate S5, especially considering Lucas is literally holding the book (The Talisman itself) as he reads it to Max.

Another said: “I think it’s DEFINITELY intentional as the plot of The Talisman is about a teenager who goes to an alternate world to find a magical item that will save his dying mother’s life.”

Of course, it’s also worth mentioning that the Duffer brothers are actually bringing The Talisman to the screens with a series adaptation for Netflix.

So it’s also possible that The Talisman’s honorable mention in Stranger Things could have just been a nod to their upcoming project.

But you never know…

Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
