An eight-year-old girl broke down in tears after her family’s £8,000 dream holiday turned into a nightmare with a 32-hour delay.

The Tynan family from Stockport were due to fly to Crete from Manchester Airport on May 29 but when they arrived they were met with chaotic scenes.

Kate Tynan boarded the plane on time with her husband and two children, but they sat motionless on the runway for almost four hours.

As the plane stood on the runway, a pilot announced that the Tui flight was waiting for the bags to be loaded due to a shortage of baggage handlers.

When the bags were finally loaded, the flight crew was unable to fly due to flight time restrictions.

Kate, 44, Ben, 45, Noah, 10, and Martha, 8, were then escorted off the plane and back to departures, where they were reportedly left without information for two hours.

Kate eventually received an email saying the flight had been canceled and rescheduled for the following afternoon.

The family gathered their bags and went home to Marple.

The Tynans returned to Manchester Airport the next day, arriving early to give them the best chance of boarding the plane.

They claim they were told there would be a dedicated check-in counter for their flight – but that wasn’t the case.

Despite staff having “no idea” about the postponed flight and it being oversold, the family managed to get checked in.

After numerous delays, the family finally boarded their new plane.

On board, a co-pilot began loading luggage onto the plane as there was no ground crew to do it, they said.

The flight took off almost three hours after the scheduled departure.

But that was not the end of the family’s woes – when they arrived in Heraklion, one of their suitcases had failed to show up and another was soaked after being left on the tarmac in the rain.

Kate, who runs her own wedding cake shop in Manchester, said she was “extremely disappointed in Tui” and said the company has shown “a complete lack of empathy” for its customers.

“When the plane finally took off, everyone cheered. I cried — I was so emotional,” she said.

“I hadn’t slept the night before and was worried about having to tell my kids they couldn’t go on vacation anymore.

‘After all, we didn’t get to the hotel until after midnight last night. My children were hungry and exhausted. I felt emotionally drained.

“I’m so glad we’re here, but I feel absolutely awful for the families that aren’t.”

Kate said after spending almost £8,000 on the trip the short break was “the most expensive holiday” they had ever taken but their experience with Tui had “robbed” them of their first few days.

‘Tui are disgusting! Total incompetence should be their slogan,’ Kate said.

“They definitely don’t put ‘you’ in the middle.

“I think it will take a few days before I’m comfortable with the whole experience.”

In a statement, Tui said it was “incredibly sorry” to customers affected by the recent disruption to operations.

“We understand that delays and last minute cancellations are incredibly disappointing and we want to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to get them on holiday as planned,” the company said.

“While any delay and cancellation is unfortunate, the vast majority of our flights are operating as planned, with more than 26,000 customers taking off on holiday yesterday.

“We would like to apologize again for the inconvenience caused and thank the customers for their understanding.”

A spokesman for Swissport, a ground handling company, apologized for the Tynan’s experience and said it “researched the specific circumstances to understand what went wrong.”

“The return of post-pandemic travel demand is positive news, but the current peak travel season is exacerbating resource issues in the recovering airline industry,” it said.

“We are working hard to address our resource issues and have hired 2,800 new colleagues since the beginning of the year. We will continue to work with our partners to find solutions to this industry-wide problem.’
