Steven Gerrard has claimed that he is only focused on helping Aston Villa, whose side are perfectly positioned to decide the fate of this year’s title race.

On Tuesday night, Villa narrowly lost to Gerrard’s beloved Liverpool, who are trying to chase league leaders Manchester City with just a few games left.

In a tense game, Douglas Luiz had given Villans the lead after just three minutes, only Joel Matip able to equalize almost immediately before Sadio Mane headed the winner in the second half.

The result has put Liverpool level on points with City on a slightly smaller goal difference, but while Jurgen Klopp’s side have just two games left, Pep Guardiola’s side have three.

City meet Wolves on Wednesday night but interestingly they will host Gerrard’s Villa on the final day of the season, meaning it’s entirely possible the Liverpool legend could decide who wins or loses the title.

When asked about it after Tuesday’s game, Gerrard said his only priority was to finish the season strong with Villa.

“We’ll see what situation we’re in at the end of the season,” the 42-year-old told Sky Sports.

“But our goal is to finish as high as possible in this league. We want to reach the top 10.

“It has to be about us, we want to go out there and put in a positive performance [Crystal] Palace and take this to Burnley.

“Let’s hope we can put ourselves in a good position to go to City.

“One thing is for sure, in the next three games we will do everything we can.”

Gerrard took over the reins at Villa Park last November following the sacking of Dean Smith and has enjoyed a good first season as Premier League manager.

Villa are currently 11th in the table and could still finish up to eighth if all results go according to plan.

But after leading Liverpool for so long and missing out on a title win with the Reds, Gerrard will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the title race and hope his Villa side can anger City when the time comes.
